Photographer Jerry Gabriel specializes in action photography based on a lifelong love and involvement in sports. He believes that action images can be as artistic as landscapes and seascapes and as compelling as a good journalistic photograph.

The shape of bodies, arms, legs and hair flying, backlit by sunshine, against a background of flaming autumn leaves or green spring trees and hillsides excites him. Add the intense emotion of the faces of performers straining for glory and the image is complete.

Ah, the decisive moment!

“The decisive moment” is a phrase coined by the great early photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. Nowhere is the concept more apparent than in striking action images.

Photographs by Jerry Gabriel have been displayed in HOT SHOTS: AREA PHOTOGRAPHERS CELEBRATE SPORTS at the Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, Massachusetts.
